ODH Celebrates100K Lives Campaign Successes
BREWSTER –As the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) celebrated saving 122,000 lives across the country through its 100K Lives Campaign, Okanogan Douglas Hospital (ODH) announced that its own efforts in conjunction with the program improved its quality of care locally.
Eighteen months ago, IHI challenged the nation’s hospitals to rethink their medical practices and save an additional 100,000 lives. A targeted milestone for the “campaign” was June 14, 2006.
Leading the nation – every facility in the state of Washington – rose to that challenge, working in collaboration to implement changes in health care which benefit patients throughout our state. Through the work in communities across the state, an estimated 1,500 lives were saved in Washington alone. Overseeing the effort and collaborating with local hospitals is the Washington Network, a partnership among state healthcare and quality improvement organizations with a common mission to bring rapid improvement in healthcare.
Since ODH joined the Campaign in February 2004, the hospital reported improvements in treatment for heart attack patients and reducing surgical site infections. Standing orders were implemented for all suspected heart attack patients who come to the emergency room and antibiotics are given within an hour of incision of all major surgeries.
“The 100K Lives Campaign challenged our hospital and provided us with a sustainable framework to make necessary improvements to our care delivery system,” said Emily Canwell, Director of Nursing Services. “We are committed to improving and sustaining our quality improvement efforts for years to come.”
