What is Osteopathic Medicine?
Osteopathy is a form of medicine that utilizes the body’s natural tendency to heal itself. The Osteopath is trained to (feel) the body’s “living anatomy” (i.e., flow of fluids, motion and texture of tissue and structural make-up) but is also trained in all aspects of conventional medicine.
Using non-invasive procedures (manipulation), the Osteopath is at times able to restore normal health function in areas impaired by trauma, chronic illness and acute health problems. Even while practicing “traditional” medicine, the Osteopathic physician uses this fact as a basis for his/her prescribed treatments.
Millions of people today are seeing Osteopaths as their physician of choice. They recognize that a DO, doctor of osteopathy, offers a variety of non-invasive healing treatments as well as conventional methods to treat pain and other illnesses. The primary difference between a DO and a MD is the additional course study of spinal manipulation and other manual methods of treatment.
Some common illnesses treated with Osteopathy are neck and back problems, headaches, joint pain, digestive disorders, head trauma, and neurologic syndromes.
For more information regarding Osteopathic medicine, please contact Larry Smith, DO at Okanogan Douglas District Hospital (509-689-4507).
